A very unusual trend in exercise for seniors is springing up in the United Kingdom; playgrounds… for adults. The Associated Press recently revealed that London will soon be opening its first playground for senior citizens in Hyde Park.
“Every park has a children’s playground, very few have playgrounds for adults, and none have playgrounds for the elderly,” says Madeline Elsdon, a member of the local residents’ association received funding for the project. “We wanted something that would be of long-term benefit to people, so we came up with this idea for an older person’s playground.”
A similar playground already exists in Manchester, England at Dam Head Park, and features low-impact excercise equiptment. The park in London will feature 6 pieces of excercise equiptment for seniors, and is hoped to encourage seniors to excercise, work on range of movement, and socialize.

While we do not currently know of any such facilities in the Chicago North Shore area, or the United States as a whole, the idea seems poised to catch on. Until then, seniors and those who care about them can use the idea as a source of inspiration – exercise for seniors can be a social and fun experience, and need not be technical or intimidating.
